    • Have heating system ready for winter

    • Seal driveway/payment cracks
  • Winter

    • Tighten any loose door handles
    • Check all locks and deadbolts on your door and windows
    • Check the caulking around showers and bathtubs
    • Confirm that firewood is stored at least 20 feet away from your home
    • Make sure all electrical holiday decorations have tight connections

Energy Saving Tips

  • Cooling

    • Use ceiling fans to cool off for less.
    • Raise the temperature on your thermostat by a few degrees
    • Install a programmable thermostat
    • Change your air filter once a month to keep system running at peak performance
    • Give your HVAC compressor space to work efficiently.
    • Open interior doors so that cooled air flows freely throughout your home
    • Check for household leaks to make sure air isn't escaping through such as doors and windows
    • Decorate for a cooler home by hanging light-colored curtains that allow light to enter a room while blocking some of the sun's rays and light-colored paint to reflect heat
  • Heating

    • Switch your ceiling fan to turn in a clockwise direction to distribute warm air
    • Cover all bare floors
    • Install glass doors on your fireplace to keep in the warm air
    • Limit your use of portable heaters.
    • Don't block air vents with drapes and furniture
    • Heat your home with the sun's help. Leave windows shades or blinds open during the day
  • Lighting

    • Replace standard bulbs with CFLs
    • Replace halogen bulbs with CFLs
    • Use motion-detector lights for all outdoor lighting
  • Plumbing

    • Insulate the hot and cold water pipes connected to the water heater
    • Add an insulation wrap to help your water heater heat more efficiently
    • Wash laundry with a full load
    • Stop leaky faucets
  • Appliances

    • Use microwaves and toaster ovens to cook or warm leftovers
    • Repair refrigerator door seals if you feel old air or if moisture is collecting
    • Dust your fridge the next time you dust your home
    • Keep your freezer full
    • Wash and dry several loads at once
    • Avoid over-drying your clothes
    • Separate wash loads into light and heavy fabric for the shortest drying times
    • Clean the dryer lint filter every load to keep your dryer running efficiently
  • Electronics

    • Plug electronics into a power strip
    • Unplug battery charges when the batteries are fully charged or the charger not in use
